Workshop: How Preparation Can Change the Course of Your Career
There’s an expression when it comes to the world of work: “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” In today’s economy, as opportunity continues to dwindle, the hands-down most critical thing you can do to change the course of your career is to up your preparation game. If you want to get "lucky," you need to make connections, build recommendations, follow industry trends and get the inside scoop on the companies you’re interested in (and competing with).
This interactive workshop will provide practical strategies around how to create your own "luck" and will also explore how to propel your career to the next level, one connection at a time through personal branding and networking. You will learn how to:
- Create a professional brand.
- Build networks online and offline.
- Effectively optimize, use and manage social media to present your best professional self.
- Leverage connections.
- Develop opportunities and get results.
Nicole Williams (@Thegirlontop), Career Expert, WORKS
Growing up watching my mom hate her job, it didn't take long for me to make the connection between the job we do and the quality of life we live. Afraid of my mom’s fate, I asked anyone willing to answer what they did for a living, where they went to school, what skills they needed to succeed and (long before it was appropriate), how much money they made. I recorded everything I learned in my "Career Journal" and have pretty much loved the world of work and career—and helping other women achieve their dreams— ever since.
After working both as a Career Counselor for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (learning the technical skill of career development) and as a Sr. Business Consultant with Service Growth Consultants (where she got a handle on the needs of businesses), Nicole founded WORKS in 2006 with the help of Michael Loeb, co-founder of Priceline and the Synapse Group. She had a vision of building a business that not only helps young women create the careers of their dreams but also supports the companies attempting to recruit and retain them as employees, as well as the businesses that are interested in providing them products and services aimed at enriching their lives.
Today, under the WORKS banner, and with an incredible team, Nicole has authored three bestselling books: Wildly Sophisticated: A Bold New Attitude for Career Success, Earn What You’re Worth and Girl on Top: Your Guide to Turning Dating Rules into Career Success. She’s worked with Fortune 500 companies including LinkedIn, Ford Motor Company, Banana Republic, The Limited, and Proctor & Gamble, on hiring, retention and marketing programs. Her career advice has been covered on The Today Show, CNN, Good Morning America, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Glamour, and Cosmopolitan.
